I go into stores, fill out a job application, the person there says they’ll give it to the manager and that I’ll hear back in a few days.
And then I never get a phone call.
Is it because my basic 1-2 page application ***** or something? Or is it cause the managers don’t really care and just leave the applications on a desk somewhere and never look at them?
Should I call them and ask?

Well since i used to be an assistant manager of Guess Jeans, I would say that if they don’t call you back, then they don’t want to hire you. Calling them back to check on the “status” of your application looks good on your behalf. At least I would look more torwards hiring someone who calls back to check on their app since it shows motivation.

In a retail situation, your best bet would be to ask if the manager was there so you could hand your application to him/her in person and introduce yourself. Try to go in at a time when they are likely to be there: mornings, paydays (if you can find out when those are), the first of the month/last of the month, and the days they get deliveries of merchandise.
I have worked in places where someone leaves an app and someone who works there already considers them a threat to their job, so they throw the app away.

You should always give the application to a manger NOT an employee…you have no idea where it goes from there. Atleast when u give it to a manager you know he/she got it…now what they do with it is up to them.
If you dont have any retail experience they probably won’t call you…..Most retail companies want experienced people…even if they do train, they want someone with a ‘go getter’ personality that knows how to sell and bring money to the company. You should always do a followup call atleast a week later just to keep u frsh in their head. But always remember that just because you apply doesn’t mean you are gauranteed a callback…..some companies accept applications all year round….but are not hiring all year round’
