Larkynsmommy asked:
If the cost of gas is going down, shouldn’t we see some items coming down in price at the stores? I mean they all seemed to blame the fact they downsized items and raised prices on the cost of fuel. What will their reasoning be if they do not lower prices?

Sounds good but it doesn’t work that way. Only the other way.

Alot of people are ‘bailing out’ but my parents say dont get use to the prices of gas being low (has been nice tho) they will go back up and we will have nothing to live off of and we are all going to die. But my parents are so neg. I dont listen to them, I think that yes it will be hard for a while but you have to look ahead for new things, new year, new president and all that. Just have to wait and see. I wish that clothes would go down.

I saw prices on many items reduced by 50% to 70% at various retailers this weekend. Even with those substantial discounts, the gross amount of sales was up only about 7% over last year, which means that retailers lost a lot of money this year that they will not recoup between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
You may see deeper discounts in the weeks ahead, but that’s a practice that will lead to liquidation eventually.

There are some amazingly low prices around, just they aren’t exactly all out there on the main street where the majority of people do their shopping.
So to answer your question, the reasoning for some is that there isn’t any point in lowering prices since nobody is willing to go out of their ways to look for lower prices, so lowering the prices only means they’ll get less money and not necessarily more customers.
In fact, most people will only buy high priced items, as the saying goes:
“you get what you pay for”.
There are some thoughts about people that you only can really understand if you have ever been trading for a living.

According to one economist, the cost of living will continue to rise.
OIL it the gold of the earth. So long as there will be wars over the oil in various countries the cost of living will still go up but the economy will continue to stay on a down slide making it harder and and harder for the average to live on the income we are getting right now.
I know someone who is 91, sharp as a whistle, was there when the great depression hit and he said men were falling to the ground all around him and his father as they were running for safety. He says that we are heading into another. Today he said wait till next year, you have not seen anything yet, and I believe him.
