hi, I recently read a news, it said somebody is going to buy the retail operation of Gateway company, and the offer is rejected. In my understanding ,Gateway is a computer company, I don’t know what dows RETAIL OPERATION of this company mean. does that mean gateway also run a lot of computer stores, and these stores are retail operations.

Gateway does (or did at least) have retail stores. You go in there and they pick out the best PC for your needs.

Yes they used to have computer stores, although I haven’t seen one in years. “Retail” generally means, selling goods or services to the general public/consumers, as opposed to Wholesale which is business to business.

Gateway thought they could make more money by selling through their own stores and not giving profits away to Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.
The only problem was the stores were a failure. They cost too much to operate and didn’t sell enough computers.
To try to avoid bankruptcy they are trying to get someone to buy the stores. But if someone said to you, how much will you give me for a chain of stores that is losing millions of dollars every year, how much would you pay?
