How do I get the newspaper to do an article about something we’re doing?

NCSMALLBIZ.COM asked:

I’ve been putting together text message marketing campaigns for some of my clients around the Raleigh NC area. This text platform allows these businesses to market to their opt-in databases. I’ve got allot of restaurants, boutiques and retail shops who are doing it and I would love to help get the word out about their text campaigns. How do I go about proposing to the news paper to write about small businesses going mobile?

You contact the newspaper — I’d suggest using the telephone — ask to speak to the business or news editor if it’s a large daily, the editor if it’s in a smaller market or a weekly paper. Then you explain what your program is and tell them that if they were interested in doing up a story that would be of benefit to many of their local advertisers (and have a list of businesses that you are servicing…names, contact persons and phone numbers…ready to email to him/her). If the paper is interested in doing such a story, they’ll tell you, if they aren’t interested there is nothing much you can do.
If there are other papers that cover your area, contact them also…and don’t forget that small weekly or monthly BUSINESS publication in your area…I’m thinking they would be more willing to do a story…and they’d try to sell ads to those business also, but that’s not your concern. :)

This link will connect you directly with the Raleigh Business Leader, so you can send them a press release about small businesses going mobile.
