I just heard a news report about how this retail Christmas season was the worst in 40 years. How can they say that? Every time I went shopping, the stores were full. I didn’t give or receive any less than I did last year. Do you think that retail chains overestimate their projected earnings? Why do they make estimations of projected earnings at all? Did you cut way back this Christmas? Do you think that American corporations are too greedy? Are Americans too greedy? I’ve posed lots of questions here–answer any or all of them.

The city I live in is having a huge ice storm. The driving conditions are horrible and there are several thousands of people without electricity because of the ice. My fiance works at a retail store. I asked him to call in because I didn’t want him on the road and the news was advising people to stay home unless they absolutely had to get out. My fiance NEVER calls in to work and is very reliable. So he calls in and they tell him too many people have called out already and he has to come to work. They have hardly any employee’s there and no customer but insist on keeping the employee’s who did come to work as late as possible. They close at 9pm and it is now 10pm and they haven’t let anyone leave yet. Keep in mind the ice storm is still continuing and driving conditions are getting worse. Is business and money more importand then the safety and lifes of others?
Do you think that mail order business hurt the U.S. economy and its Retail Stores? I would like to hear your reasons both positive and negative. Recently on the news there was a senator that thought it was bad and discouraged people to buy online. Do you think she was right?
I personally believe that it helps save gas and gives people that can’t find a local job a way of branching out and making money another way. There are even ways to search so you can shop local or pick your location.
Chinese authorities are fed up with the bad publicity with Chinese product export recalls & are claiming this is ‘disguised protectionism’ from other countries. This was reported on CBC NEWS WORLD TV Channel, Aug. 22, ‘07.
Last April thousands, probably more that were not reported, of family pets needlessly lost their lives to China’s unsafe production practices, & Chinese authorities consider all the other recalls uproar from other countries is DISGUISED PROTECTIONISM???? What do you think?
Interesting to note that a few years prior to the tainted pet food scandal, news outlets had quietly reported on unsafe jewelry imported by China that contained almost 90% lead. It was discovered when the outer layer of adult rings wore off & underneath the object contained lead. Had anyone sound warning bells regarding this story perhaps the rest of the world wouldn’t be directing it’s attention towards China so discriminatingly for their continual record of dangerous retail products?
This story made the headlines here in Australia yesterday, the general consensus seems to be “good on them” . I must admit when I worked in retail customers who were talking on their phones while I was trying to serve them was a pet ****! What do you all think of this ?

KPMG has been appointed administrator to Empire Direct and its subsidiary company Empire Property UK at the request of the directors.
The Leeds-based company, which has a turnover of £150m and is the UK’s largest independent electrical retailer, operates primarily online but had 14 retail outlets, which have now closed. The administrator has made 158 out of 350 staff redundant.
Empire Direct hit the buffers after suffering in the economic downturn and subsequently experiencing a drop in sales from the middle of last year. It was also affected by the withdrawal of credit insurance to its suppliers in October.
KPMG said parties interested in acquiring any assets of the business should contact them as soon as possible.
KPMG joint administrator and restructuring partner Mark Firmin said: “Low stock levels and operating losses mean the business cannot continue to trade in administration.
“We are working hard with the remaining employees to establish a list of customers with outstanding orders and much of our immediate effort will be focused on communicating with them.”
